2012 was the first vintage we
sourced from this wonderful mountain vineyard owned by the son of Loyal
Hughes. High up on Howell Mountain (about 1900 ft), the fruit here has an extraordinary concentrated character that exemplifies this AVA and the
The Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon
is a single vineyard wine that always has five percent of other varietals
blended in to bring a greater balance. In 2012 and 2013 we blended four percent
Cabernet franc and one percent Petite verdot into the Hughes. The 2014 is comprised of three percent
Cabernet franc and two percent Petitie verdot in 100% new French oak barrels
aged for 24 months. This wine is made to
be more fruit forward and elegant in style.
The Hughes has shown to be bright to tart cherries in fruit profile and a
bit of anise to round out the aromatics.
Duck, especially duck breast, is a classic
pairing with this wine. Everything from
venison, lighter cuts of beef, pork, and anything with fennel or that goes with
fennel works quite well with these wines.
