2014 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon

With elevations that range from 900 to 1,200 feet, the Monte Rosso vineyard is a classic mountain vineyard resting firmly on the southwest side of the Mayacamas mountain range in the Moon Mountain District of Sonoma County. The Martini family, whom Ed is good friends with, purchased this ranch in 1931 and began to share a couple blocks with Ed in 2002. Sitting above the fog line, the vineyard’s iron-rich soils are red, rocky and well drained, producing struggling vines and deeply concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon.(Now owned by Gallo)

The Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon is a single vineyard wine that always has five percent of other varietals blended in to bring a greater balance. Prior to 2012 that blend had five percent Cabernet franc while 2012-2013 it was four percent Cabernet franc and one percent Petit Verdot.  The 2014 is comprised of three percent Cabernet franc and two percent Petit Verdot in 100% new French oak barrels aged for 24 months. The notes on this wine are of dark cherries and dark floral—like violets. The assertive tannins in this wine need time to mellow and integrate and typically it begins to show itself five years from vintage.

The Monte Rosso requires foods with a little bit of fat to balance out it assertive tannin structure: nicely marbled beef, game (like elk or deer), or grilled meats and root vegetables.
