Rancho Del Oso is one of my favorite vineyards. Owned by Betty O’Shaughnessy this vineyard is located at the very top of Howell Mountain, and is named after the red bear that climbs the deer fence and swims in the reservoir.  I love the big fruit flavors and unmistakable intensity of Howell Mountain fruit.  This is the third vintage for this wine, and once again my grapes came from the northern part of the vineyard, and the terroir expression comes through in the wine’s strong but elegant structure.

My son Adam and I made this Cab like we make all our reds – pick the fruit when the tannins are ripe so only minimal winemaker intervention will be needed.  After crushing, the juice was fermented and then aged for almost two years in some of my favorite thin-staved Chateau barrels from the Nevers forest.  Because the tannins were nice and mature, the wine has power and suppleness at the same time.  The lush fruit aromas and flavors are definitely in the black cherry, bramblebush and blackberry category, with hints of vanilla and anise that lead to a long finish with cocoa notes. There’s nothing like this mountain cab with a few seared steaks in olive oil and fresh rosemary.
